REPORT ON THE XXXIX ONTA REUNION

CORDOBA, ARGENTINA

OCTOBER 29-November 2, 2007

The 2007 ONTA Annual Meeting was a memorable scientific event for the quality of the program and international participation. The town of Villa Carlos Paz, at 35 km  (22 miles) from Córdoba, Argentina provided excellent accommodation and convention facilities  for the meeting.  The geographical location at the foot-hills of the Andes and the variety of ecological sites attracted a significant number of members. Marcelo Doucet and Paola Lax, the organizers of the meeting, prepared a scientific program that encompassed a great variety of nematological subjects making possible the participation of nematologists of different background. ONTA appreciates and commends their efforts.  A total of 109 members from North, Central and South America, Caribbean Basin and Europe attended the meeting. The numerous symposia on biodiversity, nematode pests of potato and soybean, entomopathogenic nematodes, plant resistance to nematodes, biological management of nematodes, methyl bromide alternatives, precision agriculture, nematode taxonomy and the excellent oral and poster presentations provided  the  attendants with a wide range of scientific information. The tour of the towns, such as Jesús María, Caroya, Ascochinga and the areas surrounding Cordoba was of great educational value. The visit to these historical sites elucidated the important role played by the Jesuits, during the Spanish domination, in spreading agricultural, building, craftsmanship and medical knowledge to the indigenous population. ONTA members convey their appreciation and thanks to Marcelo and Paola along with their collaborators Catalina Pastor De Ward, Maria Alejandra Bertolotti and  Susana Raquel Cagnolo for the organization of this memorable reunion. Photos of the events of this meeting are posted on the ONTA website.

ONTA Executive Committee Meeting
30 October 2007 (6:00-7:55 PM)

Restaurant, Hotel Portal del Lago, Villa Carlos Paz (Córdoba), Argentina.

The meeting started at 6:18 PM. It was attended by Patrick Quénéhervé (President), Marcelo Doucet (Vice-President and Chair of the Local Arrangements Committee), Aurelio Ciancio (Former President) and Renato Inserra (Newsletter Editor). Invited members were PaulaAgudelo (Senior Spanish Editor), RodrigoRodríguez-Kábana, Jim Rich (Chair of the Nominations Committee), Charles Overstreet (Chair of the ONTA Foundation Committee) and Nahum Marbán-Mendoza.

Patrick Quénéhervé conveyed the apologies of the Secretary Rosa Manzanilla-López who was not able to attend the meeting for medical reasons. He expressed appreciation to Marcelo Doucet for organizing on short notice the 39th ONTA Meeting in Argentina after the cancellation of the Meeting in Peru.

Patrick suggested posting the reports of ONTA officers and the minutes of the previous ONTA meeting in Costa Rica at the entrance to the conference room for scrutiny and verification by the ONTA members.

Patrick thanked Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana for generously sponsoring the student paper competition. Rodrigo suggested that the competition  be limited to  posters only and proposed Forest Robinson as chair of the Committee for the evaluation of the posters.

Paula Agudelo was invited by the committee members to discuss the Nematropica report on behalf of the Editor-in-Chief Nancy Kokalis Burelle, who did not attend the meeting. Paula stated that Nancy had informed the President about her wishes to leave the post as Editor-in-Chief in December 2007. She added that Nancy had proposed the candidacy of Kathy Lawrence to replace her as new Editor-in-Chief of Nematropica.     Paula added that Kathy, who is already serving as English Editor of the Journal, has accepted the candidacy.  After a brief discussion concerning the qualifications of the new Editor-in-Chief, the candidacy of Kathy Lawrence was approved unanimously.

Renato Inserra expressed concern for the financial status of the Organization. The payment of membership dues is declining in both the United States (US) and other countries. He proposed to send dues notices by regular mail to US members because electronic notices are usually ignored. Renato added that according to the Business Manager’s Report, too many authors publishing in Nematropica default on the payment of the page costs of their papers. These unpaid costs are seriously affecting ONTA’s financial status.

Nahum Marbán-Mendoza stated that Mexican Research Agencies and Universities have sufficient funds to cover the publication costs incurred by the authors. However, Mexican and other Latin American members cannot use their official credit cards with the payment system provided by ONTA, which requires that the number of the credit card is mailed to the Treasurer. These official credit cards can be used only by passing the cards directly through the scanners or by electronic payment systems only.  The Executive Committee members encouraged the Business Manager, Treasurer and the ONTA Foundation officers to explore the possibility for ONTA to adopt this new mode for electronic payment.

On the basis of the Business Manager’s Report, the EC proposed the establishment of a committee, chaired by Jim Rich, to explore the possibility of transforming Nematropica into an on-line Journal. The Committee recommended, also, the Editor-in-Chief consider the on-line publication of the abstracts of the meeting in Argentina following the decision taken at the 38th Annual Meeting in Costa Rica, if this change would have saved costs to the Organization.

Patrick Quénéhervé provided the Committee with the results of the election for Vice-President. He stated that Rosa Manzanilla-López was elected Vice-President of the Organization.

Aurelio Ciancio, chair of the Committee for the scientific program of the Fifth International Federation of Nematology Societies’s Congress in Brisbane, Australia (13th-18th July, 2008), informed the Committee that the scientific program for the Congress was to include 48 topics to be discussed in symposia and colloquia. Additionally, 215 presentationsare also planned.  He added that topics concerning Tropical Nematology such as Nacobbus, Root-knot nematodes and Nematodes in Tropical Agriculture will be included in the program.

Jim Rich noted that with election of RosaManzanilla-López to the Vice-Presidency, the Secretary’s post becomes vacant and it is necessary to elect a new Secretary. Renato added that Rosa intends continuing her services as Secretary until a new Secretary can be elected.

Patrick informed the Committee that he received an invitation from Regina Carneiro to host the 41st ONTA Annual Meeting, in 2009, in Alagoas, Brazil. Renato added that Jenny Escobar was planning to host the 42nd ONTA Reunion in Quito, Ecuador.  Both Regina and Jenny were to invite officially ONTA members at the Business Meeting.

Patrick informed that the organizers of the Congress in Australia were encouraging the Nematological Societies in the Federation to sponsor selected symposia planned for the Congress and to provide travel funds for students to attend the Congress. Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana expressed his intention to help the ONTA Foundation in satisfying this request.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 PM.

Patrick asked members to approve or disapprove the minutes of the previous meeting in Costa Rica and the reports of ONTA officers, which had been posted at the entrance to the conference rooms. Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana moved for the approval of the documents. The motion was seconded by Renato Inserra, and it was approved unanimously.

Patrick pointed out that the report of the Business Manger indicated that many papers published in Nematropica were still unpaid, causing a large financial deficit for the organization. A discussion about the reasons of these unpaid papers followed and involved Rodrigo, Forest Robinson, Jim Rich and Renato Inserra. Nahúm Marbán-Mendoza stated that the card payment offered by ONTA cannot be used in many Latin American countries because it requires the release of the card numbers by phone or by mail, which blocks the financial transaction of these cards. He added that the official credit cards provided by Latin American scientific agencies can be used only by passing the card directly through the scanner or by using automatic electronic systems.

Renato pointed out that misunderstandings and poor cooperation by the co-authors in dividing the publication costs are also another cause of the default on these payments. These financial problems justify the need to establish a committee to analyze these problems and to start the necessary actions to transform Nematropica in an on-line Journal.

Patrick reminded ONTA Members that the 40th Annual Reunion will be held in Brisbane, Australia in conjunction with the International Congress of Nematology and with the participation of the Nematological Societies members of the Federation. He invited Aurelio Ciancio who is chairing the planning committee for the scientific program of the Congress to provide information about the scientific events.

Aurelio stated that the 48 topics for colloquia and symposia planned for the meeting include also those concerning tropical nematology.  These tropical nematology topics were discussed with the President and Rodrigo. Aurelio added that of the many topics, some will concern nematological problems which mainly affect Australian Agriculture.

Patrick then invited Regina Carneiro to show a video concerning the attractions and facilities of the site of the 41st ONTA Annual Reunion in Brazil.

PASSING

We sadly announce the death of  William F. May on 15 August 2007. Bill was a Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor Emeritus in the Department of Plant Pathology at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. His research work on potato cyst nematodes and his interactions with Peruvian nematologists made Prof. Mai a very familiar scientist in ONTA.  He was an excellent nematology teacher who trained many ONTA members such as Robert A. Dunn (ONTA President in 1994) and Maria ScurrahBill received the Honorary Member Award that was bestowed upon him and Joe Sasser for the first time by ONTA, in 1987. His pleasant personality, outstanding research and teaching made him one of the most well known scientists in Latin America and ONTA.

We would like to commemorate also Bakir A. Oteifa who died on July 15, 2007. Bakir was a well known nematologist from Egypt. He was involved in studies on tropical nematology and especially on the reniform nematode.
